It’s Mother’s Day here in the States so we took a Sunday off to celebrate the women who let us become the nerds we are today. This week we discuss the relatively light week in comics including the slow pace of The Walking Dead #110, Batman fighting Bruce Wayne, having sex with grandparents and quite possibly the worst comic we have read in a long time. Oh, and there is this little show called Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. that people are talking about among a ton of other news. It’s the Nine Panel Weekly Comic Book Podcast Presented by The Fallout Shelter in Highland Park, NJ!

REVIEW: The Mighty Titan #1
Cancer is a sign of our times. The excessive eating, drinking, polluting, and destruction that we have left in our wake has not left us and our offspring without consequences. Yet this grim reality has been in a way conquered by us, and in the end we cure it as it slowly springs about us.. What does this have to do with comics? Everything. From the early stages of comics, cancer has been tackled in every which way but direct. Marvel has brought upon the issue of eradicating the mutant gene and DC has blessed us with alien viruses that have left the invincibles (Superman and the like), mere mortals. There is nothing figurative about Joe Martino. The writer, originally from New Jersey, has battled cancer openly over the past several years. Though in remission now, at any point the branches of the disease can easily make it’s way back from the dead.

But this is not only a story about Joe. This is is one that brings upon the various stories, anecdotes, pain, and recovery of those he had a chance to sit and talk to. We pick up on Mark, a normal looking man who sits in a cafe (a la the thousands who do so throughout the country at a Starbucks), looking for jobs and sipping on melancholy. Throughout the story we find the average day of Mark dispersed with this superhero, TItan, doing what he does best. What he does best of course is saving the day, stopping bad guys, and looking pretty good (or as good as a guy will ever look) in spandex. Mark is Mr. Everyman. He is out of a job, he is loved, respected, and has a great family. Can we all relate? Absolutely. As we delve past Titan’s apparent long time feud with the evil Trenchmouth (just call him Professor), and his perfectly coiffed blonde hair, a stark parallel comes to mind. There is always a Titan to show us that there is more out there. A beacon of hope, and a symbol of endurance.

We end issue #1 with a surprising twist which left me hankering for issue #2, and with so much story left to go, I am anticipating a great ride. The pencils from Cicchitti and the overall art is great, much better than I hoped. The book itself was light, a fun read, and if it was an Image book, would probably be on my pull list. Until then, I hope to keep seeing issues pop up online. The concept of cancer was not in your face, but it looks to be an underlying issue for our lead character as he slowly moves through life, making it a pivotal part of who he is and what he does. Maybe life is tough, and maybe cancer sucks, but when you have an avenue to express your pain and feelings, even you can be a Titan.
